Let's begin with a short summary of what High School Musical is all about and then we will move on to the actors and actresses. Troy, a high school basketball star and captain meets Gabriella, a transfer student who is brainy and excels in Math and Science while on a New Year's Eve vacation. They discover that they have similar things in common and it sparks an interest in one another at a karaoke contest. After their vacation Troy finds out that Gabriella is the new girl at his scAchool and they become friends. They decide to audition for the high school musical; however Troy's best friend, Chad, and Gabriella's new friend Taylor try to discourage this. Troy and Gabriella go ahead and audition as they both love to sing; all the while Ryan and his sister Sharpay who are the school's theatre talents try to sabotage their plans. How will Gabriella and Troy's decision to audition turn their lives and the school's upside down?

Disney's High School Musical Character Bios

Troy Bolton: Troy Bolton is played by Zac Efron. Troy is the captain of the basketball team and his best friend is Chad Danforth. He goes to a New Year Eve's party at a ski resort and was peer pressured into singing with Gabriella Montez, "Start of Something New". He hadn't ever sung in public, only in the shower. He loves singing, but finds himself torn between basketball and singing with Gabriella. Troy's teammates try and peer pressure him and trick him because all they care about is winning the championship game as they can't without their captain.

Gabriella Montez: Gabriella Montez is played by Vanessa Ann Hudgens. Gabriella is a shy, but very intelligent student who enters as a transfer. She meets Troy when they were forced to sing with each other at a New Year's Eve party at a ski resort. She then comes into contact with him again when she is transferred to his school. She is hesitant to tell everyone of her past achievements, however they find out she has won several Scholastic Competitions. She loves to sing and was in a church choir. She and Troy decide to audition for the upcoming high school musical and actually get a callback, eventually winning the lead parts for the musical. In addition, to being the lead in the musical she also leads their high school to a Scholastic Decathlon.

Sharpay Evans: Sharpay Evans is played by Ashley Tisdale. Ashley is very arrogant and only wants to get her way. She and her brother, Ryan audition for the high school musical and go up against Troy and Gabriella. She finds out that Gabriella and Troy receive a callback so she changes the callback date so they won't be able to get the leads. Sharpay ends up being the understudy of Gabriella and after it is all said and done wishes Gabriella a good luck by telling her to break a leg.

Ryan Evans: Ryan Evans is played by Lucas Grabeel. Ryan is Sharpay's fraternal twin brother, acting partner, and nicer one of the two. They have starred in 17 productions together, although he isn't very smart. Taylor McKessie: Taylor McKessie is played by Monique Coleman. Taylor is the leader of the Science Club which competes in the Scholastic Decathlon. She convinces Gabriella to join the Scholastic Club. She discourages Gabriella from singing at first, but then ends up supporting her. She doesn't like athletes, but by the end of the story she has changed her opinions and is asked out by Chad Danforth.

Chad Danforth: Chad Danforth is played by Corbin Bleu. Chad is a member of the basketball team and Troy's best friend. He is very devoted to basketball and is selfish in the sense that he doesn't support his best friend's efforts in trying out for the musical. He later realizes Troy loves to sing and supports him. He teams up with Taylor McKessie to pull Troy and Gabriella away from each other and then end up putting them back together again and in the end asks Taylor out.
