After calling four different stadiums home in their first 50 years in the National Football League, the Giants moved into Giants Stadium in 1976. The idea of playing at a stadium built in the Meadowlands first attracted the Giants' attention when they realized that they could provide 15,000 more seats and help meet the increasing demands of the fans without a major switch in location. Giants Stadium is only 6.9 miles from Times Square, compared to Yankee Stadium which is 6.6.
The wind, known to the natives as the Hawk, has helped the Giants win a lot of games, as have their fans, unfairly reputed to be an affluent lot who sit on their hands. Attend an NFL East matchup with the Eagles, and you'll know that the noise can be deafening.
As far as the Jets, the fans never will be mistaken for urban sophisticates attending the opera. They know the game, and make their displeasure known when all is not well. And we're not just talking about boos and chants. At a Monday night game in 1988, with the home team badly trailing Buffalo, some fans set fire to their seats.
Weather
Bring sunblock in September and wear your woolies in December. This is generally a temperate place, but the wintry winds can make a late-afternoon game a thoroughly chilling experience.
Parking
The stadium lot, with 24,800 spots, is among the NFL's largest. Tailgaters arrive four hours before kickoff. Some fans park at nearby hotels and run car pools to the game.
