Citizens Bank Park Information
Citizens Bank Park
Pattison Avenue between Citizens Bank Way and Darien Street • Philadelphia, PA
Citizens Bank Park is a baseball-only stadium located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It opened on April 3, 2004 and seats 43,302. The first regular season game was on April 12, 2004. It replaced Veterans Stadium and is home to the Philadelphia Phillies. The ballpark has natural grass and a dirt playing field with Ashburn Alley behind center field which is a walkway featuring restaurants and memorabilia from Phillies history.
Citizens Bank Park is the newest of four venues in Philadelphia's "Sports Complex". There has been some controversy surrounding the fence distances since the park's opening. The park was designed to be both pitcher and hitter friendly. The team made a mistake by originally placing a 369 foot distance marker in the left center field 25 feet closer than it should have been. There were 228 home runs, the most in the National League, in 2004. After the 2005 season the fences in left and left center were moved back five feet and raised 2.5 feet.
Ryan Howard became the first player to hit a home run into Ashburn Alley on April 23, 2006. The ball traveled 496 feet and was the longest home run to date at the park. Howard hit the ball off of Sergio Mitre of the Florida Marlins. On June 20, 2006 Ryan Howard hit a home run that traveled an estimated 461 feet off of Mike Mussina of the New York Yankees. Howard once again was the first to reach the third deck at the ballpark. The Phillies have since painted a white "H" at the location for commemoration. It is located at section 304, Row 1, Seat 8.
Ashburn Alley runs the length of the outfield and is anchored by a statue of Phillies player and broadcaster, Richie Ashburn in center field, the position he played from 1948 to 1960. The Alley includes the:
- All-Star Walk: A tribute to Phillies players that have played in the MLB All-Star Game since 1933.
- Bull's BBQ: This is named and owned by former Phillies outfielder Greg "The Bull" Luzinski. It features ribs, turkey legs, pork, beef, and chicken sandwiches and "bulldogs". It is located at the eastern end of the Alley.
- Rick's Steaks: Phillie cheesesteaks made by the grandson and operator of Pat's King of Steaks.
- Tony Luke's: Famous cheesesteaks and roast pork.
- Games of Baseball: This is an interactive area that has a giant baseball-themed pinball machine, a run the bases game, and a Pitch 'Em and Tip 'Em game.
- Harry the K's Bar and Grille: This is named for broadcaster Harry Kalas and is a bi-level bar and grill which is built into the base of the scoreboard. It has finger foods and sandwiches.
- Memory Lane and Phillies Wall of Fame: This is located behind the brick batting eye in center field with a history of baseball commemorating members of the franchise who contributed to their history.
- Exposed Bullpens: These bullpens are located in right center field and the bi-level bullpens allow fans to get extra close to the players. Fans are allowed to heckle, but must be clean about it.
- Rooftop Bleachers: This idea was inspired by the 1920's and 1930's stands on North 20th Street outside of Shibe Park.
- Starting Lineup: As fans enter the left field gate they will see a giant 10 foot tall by five foot wide baseball card that displays the starting lineup of that day!
