Kinkead's
2000 Pennsylvania Avenue NW • Washington DC • 202.296.7700
When a restaurant has been as roundly praised as Kinkead's, you start to think no place can be that good--but Kinkead's really is. An appetizer like grilled squid with creamy polenta and tomato fondue leaves you with a permanent longing for squid. The signature dish, pepita-crusted salmon with shrimp, crab, and chiles, provides a nice hot crunch before melting in your mouth. Vegetables you may normally disdain--sweet potatoes, for instance--taste delicious here.
Acclaimed "Best Beaujolais Bistro" and recipient of the Wine Spectator's "Award of Excellence," Le Madeleine features a well thought out wine list which matches the high quality, moderately priced, modern French Bistro fare.
Michel Richard Citronelle
3000 M Street NW • Washington DC • 202.625.2150
If Citronelle's ebullient chef/owner Michel Richard is in the kitchen (and you know when he is, since the dining room views the open kitchen), diners in the know decline the menu and ask simply for whatever it is Richard wants to make. Whether you go that route, or choose from the fixed-price or tasting menus, you're in for a (very expensive) treat. Emerging from the bustling kitchen are appetizers like the fricassee of escargots, sweetbreads, porcinis, and crunchy pistachios, and entrees like the crispy lentil-coated salmon or venison with mushrooms, butternut squash, and celery sauce. But each presentation is a work of art, with swirls of colorful sauce surrounding the main event.
Citronelle's decor is also breathtaking and includes a wall that changes colors, a state-of-the-art wine cellar (a glass-enclosed room that encircles the dining room, displaying its 8,000 bottles and a collection of 18th- and 19th-century corkscrews), and a Provençal color scheme of mellow yellow and raspberry red.
Butterfield 9
1600 14th Street NW • Wahington DC • 202.BU9.8810
In spring 2001, less than a year after opening, Butterfield 9 was chosen by Condé Nast Traveler magazine as one of the top 100 new restaurants in the world. It continues to win kudos.
The highlight of Butterfield 9's classy decor is a series of large, stylized black-and-white prints of handsome men and women dressed in 1930s, '40s, and '50s fashions.
