How do you follow-up a National Championship season? Coach Urban Meyer is about to find out. After absolutely blitzing the Ohio State Buckeyes in the 2006 BCS Championship Game, the Gators are riding a wave of success and jubilation that underdog victors so deserve. The offense is led by one of the more hyped prospects to come into the SEC in a few years in sophomore Tim Tebow. Tebow will finally get to throw the ball this year, instead of the Tebow-Right running play that was called every time he took the field last season. With sophomore Percy Harvin and junior Cornelius Ingram to throw the ball to and ultra-fast Kestahn Moor to run the ball, there should be a tremendous amount of pressure taken off of Tebow's shoulders.
The Gator defense will be a little young considering all the players that either graduated or left for the NFL, however, like all Florida Gator football teams, they still have plenty of talent on defense. It just might take a few games before they live up to their billing. The Gators enter 2007 ranked 3rd in the nation, if that give you any indication of just how talented they are. History
The Florida Gators began playing football in 1906 and were coached by James Forsythe for three winning seasons. In the mid 1960's the Gators set the team record for wins at Florida with 70-a record that stood for 30 years. The team has been one of the winningest in Division I-A since 1990 since Spurrier returned to his alma mater as coach. This was the year that the Gators finished first in the SEC for the third time ever! They won their first SEC championship in 1991.
The Swamp
The Gators have had two streaks at "The Swamp" in the 1990's: a 23 game win streak from 1990-1993 and a 30 game streak from 1994-1999. The Gators have outscored their opponents at "The Swamp" by a combined total of 3,980-1,558. The Gators have only lost five times at home to a team ranked below the top five since 1990.
