Can Steve Spurrier—The Ole Ball Coach as he is known—lead his team to the upper echelon of the SEC? Coach Spurrier
Steve Spurrier has coached a national championship team, won seven SEC titles, and has won nearly 77 percent of the college games he has coached in-he is embarking on his second season as head coach to South Carolina. Spurrier led the Duke Blue Devils to the 1989 Atlantic Coast Conference championship before returning to his alma mater, the University of Florida, as head coach in 1990. During the 12 seasons he was with the Gators he won seven SEC championships, one national title and finished ranking in the nation's top 10 nine times. Spurrier, won the 1966 Heisman Trophy as a QB for the Gators, he was most recently the head coach of the NFL's Washington Redskins 2002-2003 and returned to college sports in 2005 after a one year absence from the sidelines.
In Spurrier's first season as South Carolina's head coach he led the Gamecocks to a 7-5 record and a second place finish in the SEC Eastern Division. He posted a five game winning streak, the 15th consecutive year in which he had a five game winning streak-something no other coach in college history has accomplished.
