Connecticut Huskies
Was last year’s season a sign of things to come for UConn fans or was it an anomaly. UConn missed out on the post-season entirely after a promising start that apparently turned into fool’s gold. While the talent level isn’t what Husky fans are used to, there is talent for Coach Jim Calhoun to employ. It’s also true that the point-guard position—very important in Calhoun’s system—is still up in the air, but junior A.J. Price will get the first crack at manning the position. If that doesn’t play out better than last year’s attempt, freshman Donnell Beverly will get a chance a little sooner than expected.
The starting backcourt also features Jerome Dyson, a 6-3 sophomore who averaged almost 14 points last year. If the guards can provide some consistent play to compliment UConn’s frontline play, they will be a team to contend with. Jeff Adrien and Hasheem Thabeet should make for a formidable post tandem, with Adrien supplying the points and Thabeet providing the defensive intimidation. Both players are good rebounders, averaging almost 17 per game between the two.
If the guard play can stabilize, UConn has enough starting talent and depth to remind people they haven’t gone away. While the Big East is a tough conference to get well in, having talented players goes a long way towards alleviating some of the pressure to win. If the Huskies can settle their point-guard troubles and the players continue to improve over last year, this team will definitely be one to watch.
